Brighton Baseball General Rules

The "general rules" outlined below are meant to apply to all members or participants in Brighton Baseball. Rules that apply to the individual league divisions are found on each league's web page (use the links above to go to your league's page). Each and every coach should read all of these rules, be familiar with them, and realize that each will be held responsible for upholding them. Any infraction of these rules is considered grounds for suspension from coaching or participating in our programs, at the discretion of the Executive Board of Brighton Baseball, Inc.

There will no smoking or drinking of alcoholic beverages allowed on the field in the playing area. If a coach must smoke he or she must step outside the playing field area. Alcoholic beverages are not permitted on Brighton fields.

General Brighton Baseball Rules:

1. Players, coaches, and fans shall not ride or make any derogatory remarks against the other team before, during or after a game. Coaches are personally responsible for their own behavior as well as the behavior of their players and the spectators who are supporting that team. All cheering should be of a positive nature, complimenting their own team members, not criticizing them or the opponent. We are attempting to instill confidence in our dealing with the children who must first develop coordination and teamwork. There is absolutely no room for taunting.

2. Anyone participating with a team who is not registered by Brighton Baseball is not covered by our insurance, and a coach can be held individually responsible for any accidents that may occur to an unregistered participant. Therefore, under no circumstances should anyone (friend, brother, sister) be allowed to practice with the team unless he or she is a member of Brighton Baseball.

3. An adult registered coach or assistant coach must be present and supervise every practice and game. No one under 18 years of age can supervise a practice or game.

4. The Commissioner and Protest Review Board shall suspend any coach thrown out of a game by an umpire, pending a review. That review shall be completed within 24 hours. The coach must contact the League President whenever thrown out of a game. Under no circumstances may the said coach return to a game or practice with his or her team until the issue is settled.

5. Coaches will not under any circumstances orally or visually question the judgments of the umpires, or permit team members or observers to do so. If an interpretation of rules or technicality, not a judgment call, is questioned, the coach should call for a time-out and discuss the matter quietly with the umpire and other coach.

6. The coach of the protesting team must make protests of rule infractions to the umpire before the next pitch is thrown. The umpire will notify the opposing coach that the game is being played under protest. The official protest must be then field with the League President within 24 hours.

7. It is the responsibility of each team to keep the ball fields and surrounding areas free of debris. The visiting team is responsible for getting the bases placed on the field and being sure the tarps are off the field. The home team then is responsible for returning the bases to the boxes and for leaving the field in good condition for the next game.

8. Coaches will be evaluated and can be removed by the Board upon showing of good cause. The coaches Review Board will be established consisting of five elected officials and the League President of the league the coach participates in. A two-thirds vote of the review Board will be necessary to remove a coach.

9. Every coach and team must march in the Opening Day Parade. If a coach cannot march, an adult must be substituted to march with the team.

10. When a game is canceled due to weather conditions, or inability of a coach to field a team of the required number of players, the coach should notify the League President within 24 hours and have the game rescheduled.

11. Ultimately, if the game is not made up within two weeks following the cancellation, the League President may declare the game a forfeit for the team that is unable to comply, thereby giving an official score of 7-0, or for both teams, with appropriate warning, where each team will have a recorded loss. If, in the judgment of the League President, the game could not have been rescheduled within the two- week time period, he or she may declare "No Game" and there will be no make-up. Note how these rules may affect team standings for the playoffs. Coaches should make every effort to comply with the rules in order to avoid problems.

12. No inning will start after 8:20 p.m. by the umpireís watch. All games will start precisely at 6:15 p.m.

13. If a player is injured on the field during a practice or a game, the coach must contact the League President within 24 hours.

14. Everyone must wear the proper uniform on the field. No one is permitted to wear any covering over the uniform. Sweaters or sweatshirts may be worn under the uniform but sleeves may not be white. Hats must be worn on the field. Players may not wear white wristbands (which distract opposing players). Any player not wearing the complete uniform will not be permitted to play in an official game.

15. Batters, on-deck batters, base coaches, and all base runners must wear helmets. Catchers must wear a mask with throat protector and wear a chest protector on the field during games and in practice. On deck batters must remain on the "on deck circle". Under no circumstances are practice swings to occur elsewhere. Note: There is no "on deck circle" or "on deck batter" in any league ages 12 or under.

16. The visiting team will sit on the third base side of the field and the home team on the first base side, except where both team benches are on the same side. Players and equipment should remain well outside the foul line on the respective sides of the field. Players may not mingle with spectators, or vice-versa.

17. All winning coaches must call their League President after each game to report the scores.

18. At the first sight of lightning the umpire will immediately suspend play until the danger has passed. He or she will consult the coaches to determine the advisability of resuming play. If it is evident that play cannot resume within 15 minutes, the game will be called. If the umpire shall fail to suspend play in a timely manner, the coaches shall have the responsibility for doing so. A game shall be suspended on account of lightning if an umpire or either coach says it should be suspended.

19. Between innings each pitcher is allowed a maximum of eight (8) warm-up pitches. The time between the end of the previous and the start of the next inning cannot exceed two (2) minutes. Coaches must make every effort to have their catchers ready to warm-up the pitcher or have a substitute ready.

20. Only the coach of a team may request a time-out. He or she must remain at the foul line until the umpire recognizes the request and officially declares a time-out.

21. In the event that a player or coach abuses any equipment (i.e., throwing the bat, helmet, mask or glove, etc.), the umpire will give the coach a team warning once. Further abuses on that team will result in the abusing playerís immediate ejection from the game. NOTE - in the event of a flagrant abuse of equipment or any act endangering others, the player or coach will be ejected from the game for unsportsmanlike conduct. If the umpire fails to immediately take appropriate action in the regard, either coach may call this rule to the umpireís attention.

22. Umpires are scheduled for all games properly scheduled (except in the Rookie League). If an umpire fails to show up, the teams should supply a substitute agreeable to both. When an umpire fails to show up for a game, the League President should be notified. If, in the judgment of both coaches, an umpire is not qualified, the League President should be so notified.

23. Coaches must come to each game with two new unused baseballs (or softballs). Each coach will then supply the umpire with one new ball at the beginning of the game. The new balls for the game should not be used in pre-game warm-up. Both teams will hold the second new ball in reserve. The team at bat is responsible for prompt retrieval of foul balls.

24. The schedule of games for the regular season is prepared by the Board of Directors and generally provides not less than two (2) games per week per team.

25. No team may be scheduled to play two (2) games in one day (4.2)*.

*Official Little League Rule.

26. All spectators must stay in the spectator areas. Persons not directly involved with the game may not interfere with the progress of the game.

27. League Presidents are the only ones who can cancel a game prior to 5:00 p.m. After 5:00 p.m., the two coaches along with the umpire may cancel. The League President must be notified immediately. Once the game starts only the umpire can cancel it (but a coach may suspend a game on account of lightning).

28. Warm-up prior to the game - visiting team has the field from 5:45 to 6:00 p.m. - home team from 6:00 to 6:15 p.m. (Note: During the month of May, all Major League games will begin at 6:00 p.m.).

29. The rulebooks supplied at the beginning of each season for each league shall be official in all cases not covered in these and the specific rules that follow.

30. If it is found that a player has been improperly registered with Brighton Baseball, Inc., that child will become ineligible for further play on the team. Ineligibility of a player must be declared prior to the Opening Day of the season. If ineligibility is noted after this, that particular team risks forfeiture of all previously played games and further scheduled games.

31. Once a child has been assigned to a team in a given league, he/she may not be dropped from the team roster without the expressed consent of the parent of the child, and the League President involved. If a change is to be made, it must be done at least one week prior to Opening Day of the playing season.

32. Coaches are responsible for the equipment that is given to them at the beginning of the season. They should take care of the equipment, replacing any that needs repair (with the assistance of the Equipment Committee). Coaches are responsible for returning all equipment and their teamís uniforms to their League President as soon as the season ends.

33. No jackets or other non-sanctioned uniform parts may be purchased for a team by the coach, sponsor, or other interested party. Brighton Baseball will issue all uniforms. All awards are given by the organization of Brighton Baseball; coaches, sponsors or other interested parties are not permitted to give trophies or other awards to players under any circumstances.
